Spring 2025: Design Aesthetics II

Objective:

To adapt the imagery and themes of a haiku of our choice through a multi-page zine. The finished piece must show an ability to craft a cohesive visual language through the use of design fundamentals.

Sketches:

After dissecting the themes of the haiku, the next step became to translate the idea of order v.s. chaos into visual elements. This manifested in the contrast between curved and straight forms.

Digital Iterations:

After dissecting the themes of the haiku, the next step became to translate the idea of order v.s. chaos into visual elements. This manifested in the contrast between curved and straight forms.

Inspiration was taken from the curves of horse’s hooves, which were translated into circular forms.

Typography:

The typeface chosen for this project was Lubalin Recast Sans due to its clean, round, geometric qualities. This echoed the use of curved and straight planes in the booklet, reflecting the conflict between chaos and order.

Color Palette:

Earthy, vivid tones were chosen to reflect the liveliness of summer, and the energy of the imagery of the haiku.
